You Wouldn’t Want to Be an Aztec Sacrifice!

By Fiona Macdonald; Franklin Watts, 2007; pp 32

Review/Plot: This book is utterly gross and fascinating. It’s a mere 32 pages, and maybe that’s why some reviewers have tagged this book as appropriate for ages 4 to 8, but those reviewers are whacked! My 8-year-old and I just read this, and one, or both, of us will have nightmares tonight. No bones about it (no pun intended), this book shares way too much about the Aztec tradition of human sacrifice–from flaying to the traditional heart-ripping gift for the gods. Readers follow an unlucky captive who becomes a human sacrifice, and each page includes Handy  Hints (Don’t slip on the temple floors. They are terribly steep and will be covered in blood. If you fall, you’ll be badly injured and could die a slow, painful death.)

Ages: Grades 4 to 6
